This is Aidan. So kind, friendly…and eloquent. Could have been the chef at the restaurant, or a teacher at my son's school. Instead she was unexpectedly homeless in Las Vegas after losing her home to fire. As always, I gave her a donation, asked if she needed any specific help other than money…and had a kind conversation before taking her photo. This time I decided to show other photo examples from my homelessness project. It meant so much to her, she even asked me how I would like her to pose so I could get a good shot. Can you imagine that?? So kind and willing to essentially model for me during such a vulnerable, painful place in her life. Wow. Neither of us had dry eyes when we parted ways. Gave her quite a bit more donation than I usually do, too. Wish I could do so much more… Her sign says it all. If you can, please give to those in need. Donate time, food, shelter, money, clothes, toys…anything helps. Thanks Everyone… #Aidan #nevada #lasvegas #ifyoucan #pleasehelpthose #lessfortunate #donate #time #food #shelter #money #clothes #toys #anything #streetscape #street #photography #photographer #end #homelessness #wecan

This is Tommy and his good friend. Could see they'd been there awhile. A long, long while… We talked for a fair bit. She had kids. He had none. She loved drawing, he loved her art. Both had long moments of lucidity…mixed with fleeting moments of distance and loss. Carried the weight of their world in their eyes and hands. Always the #eyes and #hands. As always before taking any photos, I offered them a donation, asked if they needed any specific help, and had a kind discussion as three humans in this big world. They could not have been more gracious, kind, and welcoming. Can you imagine that?!They have next to nothing, yet were more gracious and kind than most people I've ever met. If you can, please give to those in need. Time, food, shelter, toys, clothes, anything. Thanks everyone… #Tommy #oahu #hawaii #ifyoucan #pleasehelpthose #lessfortunate #donate #time #food #shelter #money #clothes #toys #anything #streetscape #street #photography #photographer #end #homelessness #wecan

This is Armand. He was sitting in a brand new storefront in old town Firenze. Beautiful bronze faces and fancy dresses made of laces passed by. He wasn't noticed. Of everyone I have met so far during this journey, he was doing the worst. Living conditions were devastating. And…clearly he was struggling in many ways. This should not happen to any human being. We must do more. As always before taking any photos, I offered him a donation and asked if he needed any specific help. And had a conversation between human beings… If you can, please give to those in need. Time, food, shelter, toys, clothes, anything. Thanks everybody… #Armand #firenze #florence #italy #italia #ifyoucan #pleasehelpthose #lessfortunate #donate #time #food #shelter #money #clothes #toys #anything #streetscape #street #photography #sf_chp #chpwc #firstplaceforyouth

This is Fred. He was sitting in the stairwell of the parking garage of the La Spezia central train station. Having a conversation with a local passerby before I approached him. Clearly wasn't his first time at this location. Didn't speak any English. Or Spanish. And yet, it seemed he couldn't have been more happy to have another conversation that day, even if it was with someone who didn't speak his language. He was…bemused, I think. The most impactful image that lingered in my memory? His hands. More and more I notice the pain and struggle and hardship and hardness in the hands…. As always before taking any photos, I offered him a donation and asked if he needed any specific help. And even though we struggled in our words, a warm conversation was had… If you can, please give to those in need. Time, food, shelter, toys, clothes, anything. Thanks everybody… #Fred #laspezia #italy #italia #ifyoucan #pleasehelpthose #lessfortunate #donate #time #food #shelter #money #clothes #toys #anything #streetscape #street #photography #thosehands #sf_chp #chpwc #firstplaceforyouth

This is Howard. Lots of folks living rough in San Jose. Like in all cities, in all countries. But today, on the westbound sidewalk of Santa Clara street, between 1st and 2nd in downtown San Jose, California, I passed by this man on this street in this city and his name is Howard. And…I took his photo. Gave him the last few dollars I had in my wallet. Told him, "it doesn't feel right taking something from you, without giving you something in return". I've had a few hours to think about this encounter. Can't stop thinking about it. In my dreams, all of my work is as impactful as this unexpected, unplanned shot of Howard. It's hard for me to look at. And I can't turn away… If you can, please give to those in need. Time, food, shelter, toys, clothes, anything. Thanks everybody… #Howard #sanjose #downtown #street #photography #photographer #ifyoucan #pleasehelpthose #lessfortunate #urban #donate #time #food #shelter #money #worldphotoday
